We have an exciting opportunity within our Engineering Department at Romford Rail Operating Centre (ROC) for a Fleet Support Technician (FST).

The Role

We are looking for a Fleet Support Technician to provide mission-critical help to drivers facing train defects in service. This role is a Manager grade position, reporting to a Duty Fleet Control Manager within the Fleet Control team. For reference, some organisation refer to this role as an ‘In Service Support Technician’(ISST).

Duties will include being responsible for:

  • Working a shift-based roster to enable 24/7 technical support to be provided to drivers from within our Fleet Control function at Romford ROC.
  • Being the technical authority for managing Class 745/755 defects in service, whilst offering support to third-party colleagues who manage Class 720 defects in service.
  • Using the interactive ‘Decision Support Tool’ knowledge base to quickly and safely deploy the correct mitigation for a known fault condition.
  • Working to mitigate faults quickly such that Delay Minutes and Cancellations can be minimised.
  • Ensuring units remain at all times compliant with the Defective On Train Equipment (DOTE) policy such that the railway remains safe in accordance with applicable legislation.
  • Ensuring that all daily tasks are managed in accordance with the 'FST Workflow Policy’ which will be provided as part of the induction process.
  • Being able to write clear and comprehensive work orders to ensure that depot-based teams can conduct an effective repair of the defect.
  • Working closely with the Fleet Performance team on a proactive basis, to improve methods of working and learn from improvement actions identified from prior incidents.
  • Operating in a communicative manner, to ensure that all Control Room stakeholders are aware of any train defects and working with them to meet their individual needs.

What we are looking for

The ideal candidate will have an understanding of a rail industry control room  environment, including operating rules, procedures and incident management in an Engineering related discipline.

You should have experience in a technical-based background, ideally qualified to a HNC/HND level. Intermediate level proficiency in Word and Excel is required, plus the ability to communicate effectively both in writing and orally if under pressure. It is important that you have safety awareness, understand safety management, and recognise potential consequences of mis-managed incidents.

Highly Desirable Experience:

  • Stadler Products (e.g. Class 231, 745, 755, 756, 777)
  • Desirable Experience:
  • Modern Software-Controlled Rolling Stock (e.g. Class 345, 700, 707, 717, 720, 720)
