Greater Anglia operates a busy railway network from London Liverpool Street to destinations across the east of England. We have a high standard of service for our customers throughout their journey experience so they can sit back relax and travel with confidence. Not to mention a whole new set of modernised greener trains, it’s never been a more exciting time to start a career with us. Do you want to be part of the journey? Come along and join Greater Anglia!

We have a fantastic opportunity within our Engineering Department for a Head of Engineering Services. This is an Executive Grade role and will report into our Engineering Director. Although this position is based at our One Stratford Place (OSP) office, you will also at times be required to be based at our other locations such as Ilford Depot, Norwich Crown Point Depot, and Clacton Depot.

The Role

The role of a Head of Engineering Services is to manage the Engineering Support Services team, which includes Central Planning, Safety, Technical, Reliability, Training, Performance Improvements and Engineering Systems.

You will be responsible for leading the teams to meet committed obligations to DfT as well as exceeding company targets for staff and rolling stock safety, fleet performance, and budget.

The role is also the professional Head of Engineering within Greater Anglia. It acts as the independent ‘conscience’ of the department, ensuring the engineering team remains compliant with all relevant legislation and its own Engineering Management Systems. You will work in partnership across the business and with external stakeholders, representing Engineering with a collaborative approach to achieving company targets.

As well as developing, implementing, maintaining, fleet policies and associated standards for T&RS, you will ensure safety, quality and reliability are given the highest regard in a cost-effective manner. You will provide leadership to the specification, development, and delivery of Engineering technical training, and ensure a formal technical training framework is in place to facilitate peer training and other knowledge-sharing opportunities.

In addition, you will also provide leadership to the control and management of Engineering specific IT systems and processes, which are critical to operating the business or may lead to enhanced and improved methods of work. This includes maintenance planning systems and interfaces with third party systems.

You will be responsible for leading the centralised Engineering Planning function at Romford ROC - ensuring that we optimise our rolling stock deployment, are compliant with our own maintenance plans, and provide comprehensive in-service support for failures in service.

This position will involve you working collaboratively with our maintenance partners (Alstom and Stadler) to deliver targeted/agreed business and service improvements.

This role will involve deputising for the Engineering Director as required.

What we are looking for

We are looking for a colleague who is a chartered engineer and has proficient and demonstratable leadership experience at senior level within an organisation. You should have an understanding of the rail industry, including detailed knowledge of the legal framework in which the railway operates and how operators assure themselves of safety & legal compliance.

The ideal colleague will have rail experience and have worked within a TOC engineering function. Exceptional interpersonal skills with the confidence to influence all internal stakeholders and external bodies are required for this role. You will have good financial acumen with demonstrable budget delivery. You should be commercially astute, with a good understanding of key business drivers from both an operational and commercial perspective. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are both essential in this role.
